HEB annouces a new PURCHASE OPTION UPDATE
UPDATE 13/3/09: A purchase provides a 10-year license to all current and future content, which will be growing at an average annual rate of over 13%. The purchase option includes ownership of the files for any works that are not protected by copyright [the out-of-copyright and orphan works is just 15% of the collection at this point] at the expiration of the 10-year term. In conversations with librarians, ten years was considered the best approximation for "perpetual" in the current electronic environment for platforms, delivery and archiving systems. This means that by the end of 10 years the collection will have grown to over 6700 volumes in all fields across the humanities, including distinguished series from leading university presses. Over 10 years, one-time purchase will save an average of 20% off projected annual subscription rates, in addition to libraries' internal savings on the administration and management of annual subscriptions and renewals.
